| Arizona Legislature Adjourns, Friday, June 27th After many long and difficult days the Arizona Legislature adjourned. The budget was finally passed addressing the $2 billion deficit the state faced. A broad brush description is attached for your review. As details about the lump sum reductions by agencies becomes known that too will be posted. If the state's revenue picture does not improve, there is anticipation that a special session will be held in the fall to address any shortfalls at that time. Let's hope the economy begins to improve and further reductions will not be necessary. A update on the final passage of bills can be found under the "Capitol Info" tab to the left. The budget includes many of the items in the Governor’s original proposal from January: $590 M in borrowing for school construction $330 M in K-12 rollover $85 M from the Rainy Day Fund $106 M transfer from Highway User Revenue Fund for the Highway Patrol Additionally: $360 M in agency budget reductions & $340 M in fund sweeps $1 billion in borrowing for Arizona universities, using revenues from the lottery, which will be allowed to expand marketing and enticements to players Revenue from photo-enforcement cameras for speeding violators-system has to be installed and paid for before the revenue can go to the general fund Thank your legislators for his/her willingness to work on difficult public policy issues. You've got to be registered no later than August 4, 2008 by midnight. The general election is on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. The registration deadline is October 6, 2008 by midnight.
