In 2012 the Foundation will host the following educational lectures

  • March 8th, Randye Kaye, "Ben Behind His Voices:  One Family's Journey from the Chaos of Schizophrenia to Hope".  Here's a link to Randye Kaye's handout.

During 2011 we have hosted the following events

  • February 3rd, Dr. Emily Shaffer Hudkins, "Healthy Mind, Healthy Body:  Promoting Wellness in Our Teenagers".  Her powerpoint can be found here.
  • February 5th, Dr. Emily Shaffer Hudkins, "Understanding the Mind-Body Connection:  Promoting Wellness in Youth".  Her presentation can be found here.
  • May 2nd & 3rd, Dr. Dennis Culhane provide half-day sessions on issues involved in homelessness research and policy implications.  To stay current with his materials please check out his website.
  • May 9th, Dr. Singh, "Minfulness in Everyday Life & Clinical Practice".  His powerpoint can be found here.

During 2008 AFBH hosted:

  • Darby Penney, "The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic", May 5th. A short article about her book can be found with this link.  
  • TBI/PTSD, November 10th with Dr. Rodgers Wilson, ADHS, Tracy Thomas, Ph.D. and Cara Garcia presenting.  Dr. Wilson's presentatioin is linked here.  Cara's presentation is linked here.
  • Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, lecture on November 19th "How to Capitalize on Our Two Hemispheres".  An article from the NY Times is linked here.

The movie we played for 2008 were:

During 2007 AFBH hosted:

  • May 23rd, Donald R. Vereen, Jr., MD, MPH with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Joan R. Shapiro, PhD, Vice President, Research & Development at St. Joseph's Hospital & Medical Center were presenter at a professional seminar "The Neuroscience of Alcohol and Substance Dependence" in the morning.  Dr. Vereen's powerpoint is here and Dr. Shapiro's materials are found at this link.
  • An evening lecture for the general public was hosted with Dr. Vereen presenting "Drug Trends Among Teens & Adults". 
  • On October 3rd, a professional seminar "Quantity of Life, Quality of Life: Promoting 'Growth Stocks' in Mental Health Care" Part I with Ken Duckworth, M.D., Medical Director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Chris Carson, M.D., Chief Executive Officer for Magellan Health Services of Arizona presenting. This presentation is available to view.
  • The evening general public lecture with Dr. Duckworth focused on "Neurons to Neighborhoods: Mental Health and Mental Illness".  The handout is here.

The movie series in 2007 showed:

  • "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" shown on July 10th.
  • "Days of Wine and Roses" shown on July 24th.
  • "A Beautiful Mind" shown on August 7th.

The Eric Gilbertson Advocacy Institute for Behavioral Health was launched in the fall of 2007.

  • The first class of trainees completed the 5-day training on November 17th.
  • In 2008 there were 2 training sessions graduating 25 trainees.
  • The fourth class was launched on September 12th with 17 participants continuing onto towards completion in the fall of 2009.

AFBH has awarded grants since 1999. Below is a listing by year the  number and total dollar value grants that have been given to community nonprofits:

  • 2010, VITA tax prep returned $45,675 in tax returns for consumers & employees in the system
