About Us
AFBH formed in 1997 to provide:
  1. Funds for ongoing and innovative projects that develop new services or
    improve their delivery; and
  2. Supports studies that produce long-lasting benefits.

Under the Board's direction in 2007, we launched a lecture series to help address
issues of stigma.  The 2007 lectures are identified below:

    •        The first lecture was hosted on May 23rd, 2007.  Donald R.
Vereen, Jr., MD, MPH with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
and Joan R. Shapiro, PhD, Vice President, Research & Development at
St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center were presenter at a professional
seminar "The Neuroscience of Alcohol and Substance Dependence" in
the morning.  An evening lecture for the general public was hosted with
Dr. Vereen presenting "Drug Trends Among Teens & Adults".  Copies of
the lecture notes are posted on the website.

    •        The second lecture was hosted on October 3rd, 2007.  A
professional seminar "Quantity of Life, Quality of Life: Promoting
'Growth Stocks' in Mental Health Care" with  Ken Duckworth, M.D.,
Medical Director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and
Chris Carson, M.D., Chief Executive Officer for Magellan Health
Services of Arizona presenting.  The evening general public lecture with
Dr. Duckworth focused on "Neurons to Neighborhoods: Mental Health
    and Mental Illness".

A movie series was also sponsored in 2007 addressing stigma issues.  The first
series included:

  2. "Days of Wine and Roses” shown on July 24th.
  3. “A Beautiful Mind” shown on August 7th.

•        The
Eric Gilbertson Advocacy Institute for Behavioral Health was
launched in the fall of 2007.  A class of 19 trainees is participating in training
covering a variety of topics including the role of various state agencies in the
