About the Arizona Foundation for Behavioral Health
About Us
AFBH formed in 1997 to provide:
Funds for ongoing and innovative projects that develop new services or improve their delivery; and
Supports studies that produce long-lasting benefits.
Under the Board's direction in 2007 launched lecture and movie series. Listed below are the speakers we have hosted.
During 2009 we have hosted the following events:
Dr. Patrick Corrigan, on stigma.
Dr. William Glazer, discussion on April 29th on access to pharmaceuticals for SMIs.

During 2008 AFBH hosted:
Darby Penney, "The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic", May 5th
TBI/PTSD, November 10th with Dr. Rodgers Wilson, ADHS, Tracy Thomas, Ph.D. and Cara Garcia presenting.
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, lecture on November 19th "How to Capitalize on Our Two Hemispheres”The 2007 lectures are identified below:

During 2007 AFBH hosted:
May 23rd, Donald R. Vereen, Jr., MD, MPH with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Joan R. Shapiro, PhD, Vice President, Research & Development at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center were presenter at a professional seminar "The Neuroscience of Alcohol and Substance Dependence" in the morning. An evening lecture for the general public was hosted with Dr. Vereen presenting "Drug Trends Among Teens & Adults". Copies of the lecture notes are posted on the website.
On October 3rd, a professional seminar "Quantity of Life, Quality of Life: Promoting 'Growth Stocks' in Mental Health Care" with Ken Duckworth, M.D., Medical Director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Chris Carson, M.D., Chief Executive Officer for Magellan Health Services of Arizona presenting. The evening general public lecture with Dr. Duckworth focused on "Neurons to Neighborhoods: Mental Health and Mental Illness".
The movie series in 2007 showed:
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest" shown on July 10th.
"Days of Wine and Roses” shown on July 24th.
“A Beautiful Mind” shown on August 7th.
The Eric Gilbertson Advocacy Institute for Behavioral Health was launched in the fall of 2007.
The first class of trainees completed the 5-day training on November 17th.
In 2008 there were 2 training sessions graduating 25 trainees.
The fourth class was launched on September 12th with 17 participants continuing onto towards completion in the fall of 2009.
